"Bridging the Gap and Beyond"

The definition of “GAP” refer to an unfilled space or a break in continuity. Like all societies, World Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery also faces challenges in regards to filling the void of the gap.

One of our imminent gap is the generation gap where young generation beliefs or future is geared toward relatively easier tasks rather than in challenging reconstructions. Where younger generation life goals and values have shifted to fun rather than hard work, money rather than gratitude, personal rather than collective. Our challenge is not to blame but to make hard work fun, find financial sustainability with gratitude and align our goals with society. Second gap is the void between developed countries and the emerging countries regards to reconstructive microsurgery. Microsurgery or the reconstructive skills have not become essential in reconstructing the defects. How do we develop, share and disseminate knowledge and skills with our colleagues is one of the goals our society faces. The third gap is the technical gap. Every day, we are introduced to new technologies. We must have an open mind to embrace these new technologies and apply them in reconstructive microsurgery. Without innovation, there can be no progress and innovations are sometimes painful. How do we open our minds to adapt changes and new ideas is challenge not only to the individual but to the whole WSRM society.

Our theme for WSRM 2017 in Seoul is to identify and acknowledge these gaps and work together to bridge these gaps. With this theme we hope to go beyond not only elevating the standards of practice in reconstructive microsurgery, exchange ideas, disseminate innovative techniques but to be a platform for long lasting friendship.
